The Avida digital evolution platform is a software tool used to perform experimental evolution research with self-replicating computer programs ("digital organisms"). Avida provides the researcher with complete control over many experimental settings, and can record most aspects of the evolution as it progresses. We provide an introduction to digital evolution, and then discuss the nature of digital organisms, their interactions, the environments that they evolve in, and specific experimental techniques available to the user.
