The potential software market for client-side mobile applications is strongly dependent upon the ability to rapidly migrate existing in-house software solutions, while maintaining present programming IDEs. We present a COM based client/server for connecting mobile PDA devices to databases via the Internet and wireless networks. This article describes several architectural issues involved in the design and implementation of such a system. We describe the basic system requirements which our client/server component should fulfill in order to be used to create fully integrated and secure client applications for mobile devices. After describing the general architectural issues, we describe in detail the steps required to use the component to connect to a database.
