This paper discusses the meaning of the term “information systems engineering”. It does so by giving an account of five notions embedded in the term, hence arriving to a concluding definition and a suggestion of the broad areas of knowledge needed by ISE experts. The paper ends with a brief discussion of new demands on ISE education caused by the fact that information systems are increasingly becoming multi-media and web based and that the look and feel aspect of the business process as reflected in process-oriented information systems is becoming ever more important.
