An Intelligent System for Comparing Protein Structures

Anapproachto protein structure comparisonis presented whichuses techniquesof artificial intelligence (AI) generate a mappingbetweentwoprotein structures. The approachproceedsby first identifying the seed of a possible mapping,and then searchingfor waysto extend the seedbyincorporatingcorrespondingelementsfromthe twoproteins. Correspondenceis judgedusing heuristic functions whichassess the similarity of the structural environmentsof the elements.Thesearchcanbe guidedby separately encoded knowledge.Aprototype has been implementedwhichis able to rapidly create mappingswith a highdegreeof accuracyin test cases.
