Memory-Adaptive External Sorting
- In real-time and goal-orienteddatabasesystems, the amountof memory assignedto queriesthat sort or join large relations may fluctuate due to contention from other higherpriority transactions. This study focuses on techniques that enableexternal sortsboth to reducetheir buffer usagewhen they losememory, and to effectively utilize any additional buffers that are given to them. We also show how thesetechniquescan be extendedto work with sort-mergejoins. A seriesof experiments confirms that our proposedtechniquesare useful for sorting and joining largerelations in the faceof memoryfluctuations.
