Pattern Discovery in Gene Regulation: Designing an Analysis Environment
Interactions that determinecellular fate are exceedingly complex, can take place at different levels of gene regulation and involve a large numberof components(such as genes, proteins). ’Wetlab’ biology has an inherent difficulty in considering multiple componentswithin one experimental set-up. Thus, the individual experimental results mayreflect the behavior of a sub-systemand be missing some important information concerning interactions with other components.Computationaltools can help in simultaneously analyzing many different pieces of biological knowledge from different data sources. Suchtools will aid in comprehending the wholesystem(call, organism)as a function of all its components;this, in turn, will facilitate discoveryof the global patterns in genetic regulation. The Worm Community System (WCS) which contains extensive knowledgefrom manydifferent sources regarding model organismC. elegans, presents a suitable environmentfor developmentof the integrated analysis tools.
