We have developed a MultiMedia Visual Information Seeking (MMVIS) Environment that is the first system to support an integrated approach to the direct manipulation specification of temporal queries and the browsing of temporal relationship results. In this paper we address the optimization of queries specified via our direct manipulation visual query interface. Queries in MMVIS are multidimensional range queries that exhibit features unique to such a direct manipulation query paradigm. In particular, queries are incrementally specified and continuously refined. Incremental result sets must be passed to the visualization component to provide continuous update and context, and updates of the underlying multimedia data (e.g., video) are rare.
