This paper describes current state-of-the-art research on low power wireless systems for medical applications. Distinct design criteria and challenges in this area are addressed. A study of existing wireless technologies and their key applications are presented. A brief assessment of future trends for wireless medicine with a focus on emerging technologies is provided. Finally, a number of different energyscavenging techniques for the future development of autonomous wireless nodes are reviewed.
