The temporal aspects of work for HCI

The general aim of the workshop is to explore the temporal aspects of work for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). This position paper attempts to contribute to the exploration by proposing a domain approach to temporal aspects. The approach derives from a view of HCI as an engineering discipline committed to `design for effectiveness'. The approach models work as transformations of the domain of application of an interactive worksystem, whose behaviors carry out the work. How well the work is carried out, that is, `task quality', along with workload or usability, constitute worksystem performance. The temporal aspects of work, as domain transformations, relates directly to work and only indirectly to devices or usability. The domain and its expression, as task quality, are thus able to make additional contributions to design.
