The Department of Information Science at Loughborough University has carried out several user studies on electronic journals in recent years, including the ELVYN and Cafe Jus projects. We now report on two large-scale surveys carried out in mid 1998 to early 1999, with which this department was associated. The first was conducted under contract to the UK governments Department of Trade and Industry between April and December 1998, and involved a questionnaire survey to all UK-based publishing enterprises, to investigate their intentions and expectations about electronic publishing; over 1,000 responses were achieved. These results provide an authoritative picture of the British publishing industrys views about the potential commercial prospects for electronic publishing.
