Networked appliances can simplify our lives, but interacting with them can be difficult in itself. KitchenSense is an early prototype of a networked kitchen full of sensors that uses CommonSense reasoning [] to simplify control interfaces and augment interaction. These augmented appliances understand people’s intentions by considering embedded sensor data together with daily-event knowledge. A centrally-controlled mechanism built into the physical space can develop a shared context across various appliances through proximity sensors. A networked space that better understands what people are doing can provide better interfaces to simplify tasks, learn new skills or develop new behaviors.
