The University of California, Berkeley and the University of Liverpool are developing a Information Retrieval and Digital Library system (Cheshire3) that operates in both singleprocessor and “Grid” distributed computing environments. This paper discusses the architecture of the system and how it performs Digital Library tasks in a Grid computing environment. Categories and Subject Descriptors H.3.3 [Information Systems]: Information Search and Retrieval—retrieval models, search process; H.3.7 [Information Systems]: Digital Libraries—systems issues General Terms: Algorithms, Performance, Design
