A neural-network-based approach is proposed in this paper providing multimedia systems with the ability to adapt their performance to the specific needs and characteristics of their users. Two HCI applications are used to illustrate the performance of this approach. In the former, adaptive non-linear relevance feedback is proposed for content-based retrieval of multimedia information. In the latter, facial analysis is used to derive cues about the emotional state of a PC user, creating a more friendly and effective interaction.
