Thispaperpresentsresultsfromaneight-daynetworkpacket traceofMosquitoNet.MosquitoNetallowsusersoflaptopcomputersto switchseamlesslybetweenametropolitan-areawirelessnetworkanda wirednetwork(10Mbit/sEthernet)availableinocesandon-campus residences.Resultsincludetheamountofusermobilitybetweenthewired andwirelessnetworks,theamountofmobilitywithinthewirelessnetwork,anexaminationofapplicationend-to-enddelays,andanexaminationofoverallpacketlossandreorderinginthewirelessnetwork. Wendthattheaveragemobilehostswitchesbetweenthewiredand wirelessnetworks14timesduringthetraceandmoveswithinthewireless networkvetimes.Roundtriplatenciesinthewirelessnetworkarevery high,withaminimumof0.2seconds.Evenhigherend-to-enddelays,of uptohundredsofseconds,areduetopacketlossandreordering.These delayscauseuserstochangetheirusagepatternswhenconnectedtothe wirelessnetwork.Weconcludethatlatencyisacriticalprobleminthe wirelessnetwork.
