    Abstract.Tounderstandthemeaningofanimageorimagesequence,toreducetheeffortinthedesignprocessandincreasethereliabilityandthereusabilityofimageunderstandingsystems,awide spectrumofAI techniquesisapplied.Solvingan imageunderstandingproblemcorrespondsto specifyinganimageunderstandingsystemwhichimplementsthesolutiontothegivenproblem. Wedescribeanimageunderstandingtoolboxwhichsupportsthedesignofsuchsystems.Thetoolboxincludeshelpandtutormodules,aninteractiveuserinterface,interfacestocommonprocedural andAIlanguages,andanautomaticconfigurationmodule.
