DBMS Research at a Crossroads: The Vienna Update

- On April 23, 1993 a panel discussion was held at the IEEE International Conferenceon Data Engineering in Vienna, Austria, at which five membersof the data base researchcommunity discussedfuture research topics in the DBMS area. This papersummarizesthe discussion which took place. The panel followed a similar format to that usedat Laguna Beachfour yearsearlier, and four of the five panelists attendedthe earlier conference. As such, we contrast the recommendationsof the Laguna Beachparticipants with thoseobtainedfour yearslater by a similar group.
