The Architecture Of An Active Data Base Management System
The HiPAC project is investigating active, time-constrained databasemanagment. An active DBMS is one which automatically executes specified actions when speciifed conditions arise. HiPAC has proposedEvent-ConditionAction (ECA) rules as a formalism for active database capabilities. We have also developedan execution model thatspeicifeshow theserules areprocessedin thecontext of databasetransactions. The additional functionality provided by ECA rules makes new demandson the design of an active DBMS. In this paperweproposean architecturefor an active DBMS that supports ECA rules. This architectureprovidesnew formsof interaction, in supportof ECA rules, between application programs and thDBMS.This leads to a new paradigm for constructing databaseapplications.
