— The default storage system for the World Wide Web is the file system- the concept of a database is not built into the core of the HTTP protocols or into the HTML language. But the bulk of information served off web servers is of similar structure and ideally it should be served in conjunction with a database. The typical approach is to use some method of dynamic page generation on top of a traditional relational database system and using the three-tier architecture. This is done by professional web publishers. However, technical expertise required prevents the majority of authors to use a database approach. And if information is not structured in a database the potentials of using it in the semantic/services web is limited.
