The segmentation and interpretation of threedimensionalimagesof proteins is considered. Atopological approachis used to represent a protein structure as a spanningtree of critical points, whereeach critical point correspondsto a residue or the connectivity betweenresidues. Thecritical points are subsequently analyzed to recognize secondarystructure motifs within the protein. Results of applyingthe approach to ideal and experimental images of proteins at mediumresolution are presented.
