Mobile devices of the PDA and cellular phone genre are becoming increasingly ubiquitous. However, their ability to enable a truly mobile multimedia experience has been compromised by a number of factors including hardware limitations and a paucity of software graphics rendering engines for such devices. Ongoing developments in mobile technologies are rendering these limitations obsolete. However, a key remaining problem remains the lack of a standardised, open multimedia rendering framework for mobile devices. In this paper, a framework for rendering SMIL compliant, multimedia presentations on mobile devices is described.
