In this paper we present initial findings from an empirical study that has been conducted with 13 marketdriven software companies based in Recife, Brazil. The objective of the study is to explore the state of the practice in requirements engineering (RE) for commercial off-theshelf software products. The study followed a qualitative research method using questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The empirical study investigates key challenges faced by market-driven companies previously identified in a literature survey. Our goal was to gather empirical evidence from studied companies to evaluate specific facts concerning RE for software products identified in the literature.
