An Analysis of Indonesian Language for Interlingual Machine-Translation System

Thispaper presentsBlAS (Bahasa Indonesia AnalyzerSystem), ananalysis systemforlndonesian language suitablefor multilingual machine translation system. BIAS is developed with a motivation tocontribute toon-going cooperative researchproject inmachinetranslation betweenIndonesiaandotherAsiancountries.In addition,it mayserve tofosterNLPresearchinIndonesia. Itstartwith anoverviewofvariousmethodologiesforrepresentalionoflinguisticknowledgeatwlplausiblestrategiesofautomatic reasoningforlndonesian language. Weexaminethesemethodoiogiesfrom theperspective of their relativeadvantage and their suitabilityforaninterlingualmochine-translation environment. BIAS is a multi-level analyzer which is developed not only to extractthesyntactic andsemantic structure ofsentences butalso to provide a unifying methodfor knowledge reasoning. Each phase oftheanalyzer is discussedwith emphasis onIndonesian morphology andcase-grammaticalconstructians.
