Ontology Design Principles and Normalization Techniques in the Web
The open, decentralized nature of the Semantic Web demands fundamental changes in our approach to ontology development and deployment. To maximize the expressiveness and robustness of an ontology system, ontologies should be ideally designed to be orthogonal to each other in their conceptualization while physically independent in their engineering representation. Using the existing design and deployment of BioPAX ontologies as examples, this article illustrates how various design principles and engineering techniques can be used to improve the overall stability and reusability of an ontological system.
