Tactual Displays for Wearable Computing

:Thispaperprovidesa generaloverviewoftactualdisplays(i.e.,devicesthat communicateto a userthroughthe senseoftouch) andissuesconcerningthe developmentofsuchdisplaysforwearablecomputing.A wearabletactiledirectionaldisplayispresented.It takes advantageofa sensoryphenomenoncalled'sensorysaltation'and simulatesdirectionallinesand simplegeometricpatternsdynamically. Initialresultsindicatethatthisinformationisintuitiveandeasytointerpretevenforfirst-timeusers,andinterpretationsarehighlyconsistent amongobservers.Severalapplicationsofthistactiledirectionaldisplayforwearablecomputingareproposed.
