Volumetric Ray Tracing
We introduce a framework for texturing volumetric objects with displacement maps and texture maps, which are introduced as volume modeling tools. In this framework, an implicit-to-explicit-toimplicit conversion is performed on a uniform resolution volume. A volumetric object (implicit form) is first converted into a point representation (explicit form). Then, texture colors and displacements are assigned onto the points by a parameterization method. Finally, texture colors are splatted into a 3D texture volume and points are re-voxelized back into the volumetric representation. We propose efficient conversion algorithms for this framework, such as voxelization and texture splatting algorithms. In the voxelization, we use region encoding to accelerate distance computation and a new box filter to accurately voxelize surfaces. In the texture splatting, Gaussian splats are projected into 3D texture space to acquire the texture volume. Our framework decouples displacement and texture ma...
