The e-learning project GOLEM introduces a group and role-oriented concept to the course "Man-Machine Interfaces" at the University of Technology in Hamburg, Germany. Student groups develop and test interfaces during the course period. Electronic communication systems are used to carry out "usability tests". To imitate reality, tests are performed in a distributed manner. The video connections among users located in separate rooms help to create a realistic test environment and provide practical experiences to students. The role-oriented concept (administrator, developer, test person) during the test phase ensures that students get the opportunity to experience various dimensions of "usability testing".
