Towards a Novel Architecture to Support Universal Location Awareness
—The rapid advances in a wide range of wireless access technologies along with an industry-wide IP-convergence have set up the stage for context-aware computing. The “location” information of the user plays the most important role in defining this context. To have such a computing environment span globally, one needs a universal location service architecture that is independent of all wireless access technologies and scale well over a wide range of granularity. This brings forth the debate of choice between the geometric and symbolic forms of location information as a consistent universal representation. We discuss how symbolic location information can be used to profile personal mobility pattern of users for building a predictive framework which provides supports for a number of location-aware services. A flexible architecture with its necessary data models and security aspects is then proposed for providing location support to these applications as appropriate. The paper con...
